Function Specific Activities

  • Perform sampling and physical, chemical, and microbiological testing of finished products and raw materials. 
  • Conduct environmental sampling and analysis to monitor facility sanitation.
  • Inspect finished products, raw materials, supplies, equipment, personnel, and facilities for adherence to quality specifications, current Good Manufacturing Practices, and sanitation.
  • Communicate effectively and thoroughly to management and peers any test results or inspection findings outside of specifications.
  • Manage product hold and release system.
  • Identify non-conformances in quality or practices and take or recommend appropriate corrective action within scope of knowledge.
  • Conduct all laboratory testing with accuracy and integrity and ensures that it is accomplished in compliance with all federal, state, and company policies and procedures.
  • Operate, monitor, and control water process systems including Ultra-violet lights, ozonation process, Reverse Osmosis filtration process, distillation process, sub-micron filtration process, pumps, valves, instrumentation.   Read gauges, meters, chart recorders, and controller readouts and record data.
  • Operate mineral mixing skids and monitor mineral mixing/addition process
  • Prepare positive bacteria solutions and test all new batch lots of received goods e.g. (media, vialed broths, monitors, TSB, plate count agar)
  • Prepare serial dilutions of positive bacteria and conduct monthly testing of all current and new media
  • Perform CIP's on batch tanks and filler rinse CIP's between product changes.
  • Perform pre-startup inspections prior to startup of each new product, label, or packaging change. 
  • Collection, documentation, and destruction of retention samples
  • Keep accurate, complete, and legible records.  Properly amend, identify, and file records.   
  • Safely handle/use chemicals, biological agents, and waste.  Potentially including hazardous materials.  Read, understand, and maintain material safety data sheets. 
  • Conduct housekeeping and general labor duties as assigned.
  • Prepare laboratory media and reagents.
  • Conduct clerical duties including copying, filing, faxing, data entry, and document reproduction.
  • Transfer product testing results from paper records to system database (SAP)
  • Issue blended water to fill process w/o's (SAP)
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on in process equipment e.g. (Chlorine monitoring equipment, batch tank sample ports)
  • Perform monthly 5's audits on various areas under laboratory control.
  • Collect, record, and prepare daily sensory samples for comparative panel review.
  • Operate Ion chromatograph daily for bromate results allowing for product release.
  • Prepare standards and preform calibration on Ion chromatograph
  • Working knowledge of ETQ system and document update process. E.g. (Change, verify, and submit revisions of documents as required or requested)
  • Complete work orders to ensure proper maintenance, verification, calibrations are completed in a timely manner in accord with DEP, EPA, TCCQS, and ISO requirements
  • Data entry and review in SAP and Infinity QS systems of finished mineral batches, required physical water testing data, and pre-startup inspection information. 
  • Record and archive documents from quality and production

Qualifications

Education:  

  • High School Diploma. 
  • College or technical school training is desirable.

Experience: 

  • Minimum of one year work experience in an industrial or laboratory environment required.

Technical Knowledge/Critical Skills:

  • Ability to achieve demonstration of capability for all required laboratory tests.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend English.

  • Basic Microbiology-Basic knowledge of food and water microbiology used to make judgments about the safety of ingredients, beverages, manufacturing techniques, packaging, and storage conditions.
  • Basic Analytical Chemistry-Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis. This includes preparation, separation, detection, and other techniques and applying concepts of precision and accuracy. It also includes understanding new developments in the field and their effect on our products, ingredients and packaging materials.
  • Applied Reading-The ability to read, understand, and apply standard written text in English that may or may not be written in traditional sentence form such as letters, memos, or manuals to complete job tasks.
  • Basic Arithmetic Computation-The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. This also includes the ability to compute ratios and percentages.
  • Data Entry-The ability to enter data using a keyboard or keypad.
  • Using Personal Computer-The ability to operate relevant personal computing hardware; ability to learn relevant personal computing hardware (e.g., personal computers, printers, and storage media) and standard software programs (e.g., word processing, graphics packages, spreadsheets\databases, SAP). This includes maintaining current knowledge and keeping up with new releases in relevant programs.
  • File Management -Ability to develop organized filing system for maintaining and retrieving departmental records and documentation (i.e., correspondence, reference materials and notes).

  • Water Filtration / Treatment- Knowledge of the basic chemistry of water, foreign materials (e.g., microbiological and other contaminants) found in water, and filtration or means of effectively removing contaminants or impurities. Includes knowledge of water standards (e.g., NSF, EPA) and their functionality. Ability to select and integrate water filtration equipment to achieve a cost effective solution to removal of water impurities affecting beverage taste or dispensing. This may include the ability to design and operate water facilities.
  • Calibration-Ability to measure instrument variations and apply corrections for ensuring the accuracy and precision of an instrument or measurement tool.
  • Laboratory Practices-Knowledge and application of Good Laboratory Practices (e.g., handling of chemicals and glassware, preparation of standards and reagents, proper measuring techniques, data management, housekeeping).
  • Laboratory Testing-Knowledge of packaging and equipment test procedures, measurement devices, reporting methods, and understand TCCC Design and Performance Criteria. Ability to analyze test results in order to assist in making accurate development / commercialization decisions.
  • Lab Safety-Knowledge of government lab safety regulations, including hazardous materials, OSHA and chemical hygiene policies. Includes knowledge of procedures for safe handling of chemicals and glassware, use of personal protective equipment and adhering to Company safety rules. Knowledge and application of Good Laboratory Practices (e.g., housekeeping, handling chemicals and glassware, preparing standards and reagents proper measuring techniques).
  • Production Processes-Knowledge of ingredient, concentrate, syrup, and beverage manufacturing processes. These include emulsification, blending solids, blending liquids or juices, carbonation, filling, water treatment, packaging, cleaning and sanitation, or refrigeration technologies.
  • Audit Interviewing-Ability to question individuals in order to gather and understand facts about processes being reviewed. 
  • Audit Objectivity-Ability to remain independent and objective when performing audits. This includes adhering to the facts and standards and not being unduly influenced by operating management.
  • General Auditing-General knowledge of audit process (e.g., interviewing, data analysis, inspections). This includes communicating findings and determining corrective actions.
  • The Coca-Cola Quality System-Knowledge and application of policies, principles, and standards of The Coca-Cola Quality System in order to ensure consistent quality, protect the Company's trademarks, promote customer and consumer satisfaction, and respond to changing business needs.
  • Good Manufacturing Practices-Knowledge of the basic elements of Good Manufacturing Practices. This includes understanding of Company and regulatory (e.g., cGMP, CFR) guidelines.

Organizational Relationships

  • Supervision Received:  Works independently, with minimal supervision.  Quality Manager or Quality Specialist provides daily direction, tasking, coaching, feedback, and technical assistance.  Quality Manager provides overall department direction as well as career coaching, feedback, and development.  Shift Superintendent provides coaching and decision assistance on nights/weekends if necessary.
  • Supervision Given:   Typically none.  However, may provide some training and direction to new hires.
  • Relationships with Co-workers:  Works frequently in a professional and collaborative manner with team members and team leaders from the production, maintenance, shipping, and materials departments.  Typically works independent of other QA team members, but provides full support to other team members in completing team duties.  Individuals working shifts during the normal business week must be able to work in a professional manner with coworkers from all levels of the company.

Job Characteristics

Work Schedule:      

  • This is a shiftwork position.  However, the incumbent will need to be able to work any shift as directed including nights, weekends, or holidays.  Periodic overtime work will be required.

Work Environment:  

  • This is a plant support position.  40% non-conditioned industrial environment, 40% laboratory, 20% Office.

  • Computer, calculator, colorimeter, copier, fax, spectrophotomer, pH/ISE meter, TDS/Conductivity meter, microscope, titrator/titration kit, autoclave, Ultrameter, incubator, water bath, heat block, laboratory balance, torque meter, light meter, noise meter, 2-way radio, Allen-Bradley Panelview controller, Ion Chromatograph, MediaPrep, MediaFill, personal protective equipment.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to move throughout the plant including around machinery, under conveyor, climb stairs and ladders.  Position requires frequent walking, stooping, bending, twisting, and ability to stand for up to 12 hours.  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs to shoulder height.  Full capability to see, taste, and smell product.  Ability to distinguish colors in chemical titration and hazard labels.
