Automation Project Manager
Basic Function:
The Automation Project Manager is responsible for supporting the design, development, integration, and execution of industrial automation systems as part of strategic capital and transformation projects.
This role operates within the Strategic Projects team, supporting project delivery while maintaining strong alignment with the Automation team to ensure all solutions comply with established standards, architecture, and long-term support requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Automation Development (Project Support Focus)
Support development, configuration, and modification of industrial automation systems as part of project execution
Assist in the implementation of HMI/SCADA applications aligned with established standards
Support development of system structures, alarms, and user interfaces to meet operational and project requirements
Assist with implementation of automation logic and scripting required for system functionality and integration
Systems Integration (Execution & Support)
Support integration of automation systems across multiple platforms (control systems, visualization, and enterprise systems)
Assist in implementing data exchange and system communication for both real-time and transactional processes
Ensure solutions are delivered in alignment with established system architecture, standards, and cybersecurity requirements
Industrial Networking (Coordination & Support)
Support implementation of industrial communication networks required for project execution
Coordinate with IT and other stakeholders to ensure proper connectivity, network segmentation, and system communication
Assist in ensuring network infrastructure supports reliable and secure operation of automation systems
Project Execution & Commissioning
Support automation scope throughout project lifecycle (design, development, FAT, SAT, commissioning)
Assist with system validation, testing, and documentation
Coordinate with vendors and internal teams during implementation
Ensure proper system handover to Operations and Automation teams
Organizational Alignment & Collaboration
Reports on the Strategic Projects team and supports execution of automation scope within capital projects
Maintains strong functional alignment with the Automation team to ensure compliance with standards and long-term sustainability
Works closely with Automation to:
Aligning PLC, SCADA, and integration designs with site standards
Ensure consistency in architecture and implementation
Support smooth system handover to Operations after project completion

Coordinates vendor activities and project delivery

Maintains automation standards, architecture, governance, and long-term support strategies
Supports operational reliability, maintainability, and continuous improvement initiatives
Automation Engineer – Projects
Supports execution of automation scopes within projects
Ensures alignment with established automation standards
Coordinates commissioning and operational handover activities
Serves as a coordination point between Strategic Projects and Automation teams
Key Success Factors
Ability to balance project execution speed with automation standards compliance
Successful delivery of automation scope within project timelines
Minimal rework due to alignment with automation standards
Smooth transition of systems to operations and automation teams
Strong collaboration across Projects, Automation, IT, and vendors
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 3+ years of experience in industrial automation or project environments
- Hands-on experience with:
- PLC programming (Rockwell preferred)
- SCADA/HMI systems
- SQL Server or industrial data integration platforms
- Industrial communication networks
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT, or commissioning activities
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Ability to work on-site in an industrial environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in capital project execution or system implementation
- Experience with system migrations or upgrades (legacy to modern platforms)
- Exposure to MES or enterprise system integrations
- Knowledge of OT/IT cybersecurity concepts
- Experience working with external vendors and system integrators
Change Management, Continual Improvement Process, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), ISO 14001, Lean Manufacturing, Microsoft Office, Production Management, Production Processes, Quality Control (QC), Six Sigma, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Waterfall Model
