Automation Engineer
About the Role
The Automation Engineer is responsible for the development, configuration, programming, integration, and support of industrial automation systems within manufacturing operations. This role spans PLC programming, Ignition SCADA development, industrial networking, SQL Server data integration, and operational technology (OT) system reliability.
The Automation Engineer works closely with Operations, Engineering, IT, and external vendors to ensure automation systems are secure, reliable, maintainable, and aligned with business needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Program, modify, and troubleshoot PLC applications (Ladder Logic)
- Configure, maintain, and support Ignition SCADA applications
- Develop and maintain SCADA screens, alarms, and tag structures
- Implement basic to intermediate Python scripting in Ignition
- Integrate automation systems with SQL Server databases
- Support and troubleshoot industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Rockwell DLR)
- Perform root cause analysis of automation and control system issues
- Support system backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures
- Develop and maintain automation documentation and SOPs
- Collaborate with Operations, IT, Engineering, and external vendors
- Provide off-hours or on-call support as required by operations
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- 3+ years experience in industrial automation or manufacturing environments
- Hands-on experience with:
- PLC programming and troubleshooting
- Ignition SCADA (Vision and/or Perspective)
- SQL Server (queries and data integration)
- Industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Rockwell DLR)
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Ability to work on-site in an industrial environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience owning automation platforms
- Experience with system upgrades or migrations
- Exposure to OT/IT cybersecurity concepts
- Experience mentoring automation team
