SES (Safety, Environmental, Security) Coordinator

Job Summary

The SES Coordinator will engage in variety of activities in a wide range of SES disciplines. Under the mentorship of the Senior Manager of Safety, Environment and Security, the SES Coordinator will undertake projects directed at specific topics such as equipment safety, industrial hygiene, occupational ergonomics, environmental compliance, sustainability and training & education.

The SES Coordinator will work to create standards, set standard work, and make recommendations on EHS related programs for the company. He/she will work closely with multiple teams ranging from production to quality to provide EHS support on day-to-day operations, conduct safety inspections, audits, deliver safety trainings to employees, participate in analyses of workplace incidents and help drive corrective actions.

Key Tasks and Job Duties

  • Represent the Columbus Syrup Plant as an ambassador for safety.
  • Perform all tasks in a safe manner to ensure achievement of Quality, Service and Cost objectives.
  • Serve as a lead member of the Safety Committee, maintaining meeting minutes and conducting meetings when Senior Manager of SES is not present.
  • Co-owner of SES Training Program along with Training Coordinator.  Develop annual training log, assist with new hire training, conduct in house training and create in house training content.
  • Coordinate Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) program.  Ensure annual and as needed updates are made and reviewed by Safety Committee.  Track annual review by all Associates.
  • Maintain electronic forklift monitoring system.  Reset/initialize systems when needed.  Interact with vendor on repairs/issues.  Maintain Infomatics database.  Generate reports.  Download videos.
  • Coordinate all tasks associated with PPE maintenance.  Work with vendor on PPE vending.  Maintain vending database.  Ensure PPE bins are continually stocked.  Audit PPE storage on the production floor.  Issue specialized PPE to maintenance and lab Associates.  Manage safety shoe program.
  • Maintain contractor safety database.  Assist with contractor management and inspections.  Conduct contractor safety orientations.
  • Work with Safey Committee Lead to ensure all routine safety/environmental inspections are completed on time (i.e. eyewash, containment, first aid, spill kits, hoists, etc.).
  • Conduct weekly hazardous waste inspections.  Schedule hazardous waste pick-ups.  Prepare waste shipments (labeling/packaging).  Ship hazardous waste and complete associated paperwork.
  • Assist with the recycling program.  Ensure recycle containers are available and labeled.  Provide training on recycling expectations to plant Associates.
  • Schedule and conduct annual audiometric testing for Associates in Hearing Conservation program using in house equipment.  Conduct fit testing of hearing protection for all new hires.
  • Participate in ISO Audits.  Work with auditors on presenting materials and providing requested documents.
  • Support the OSHA VPP Program in renewal audit preparations.
  • Maintain and improve the BBS Program.  Work with Safety Committee Lead to train new hires on process, post schedules, track completion and coordinate corrective actions to ensure follow through on identified hazards.
  • Assist Associates by creating and printing HazCom labels for chemical containers.  Maintain chemical inventory along with electronic SDS sheets.
  • EtQ document owner – revise, review, create and load documents.
  • Conduct assigned KORE Compliance Audits.
  • Participate in Accident/Near Miss Investigations, along with taking photographs and loading reports into EtQ.  Creation of Safety Alerts.
  • Ensure timely closure of assigned audit items.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors on safety projects.
  • Actively engage with Associates with observations, inspections, corrective actions.
  • Assist in the filing of documentation required by various regulatory agencies (i.e. OSHA, EPA, others).
  • Lead the plant ergonomics program/team including conducting assessments using industry standard methods.
  • Collect data cards for wastewater pH monitoring along with reviewing data on daily basis.  Assist with adding microbes and antifoam to system as needed.
  • Order safety related supplies (spill clean up materials, ladders, tags, signs, etc.).
  • Support LOTO program in the creation of training material, procedures and maintaining lock log and lock/tag issuance.
  • Assist contract Security Officers when needed.  Ensure security post orders are up to date.
  • Update safety communication boards.
  • Assist with spill clean-up.
  • Print ID badges, set clearance codes and deactivate badges.
  • Travel to other company locations or conferences.
  • Assume duties of Senior Manager of Safety, Environment and Security in his/her absence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety, environmental or another related field
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA, EPA, DOT, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, VPP and other governmental regulations

Additional Skills and Qualifications 

  • Ability to achieve certification to operate a PIT sit down rider.
  • Ability to operate a walk behind floor scrubber.
  • Ability to pass Fall Protection Competent Person certification.
  • Ability to pass RCRA and DOT certifications.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English.
  • Ability to respond to a workplace injury utilizing knowledge from first aid, CPR and AED training.  Able to coordinate with Amphibious Medics on third party first aid support.
  • Able to understand, follow directions and react under changing conditions.
  • Able to demonstrate good attendance and work ethic.
  • Navigate SAP to enter work orders.
  • Able to work on all shifts, weekends and/or holidays, as required.
  • Able to work up to twelve (12) hours shifts, as needed, to satisfy business needs.
  • Physical agility including climbing, bending, kneeling, twisting, and lifting minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Self-starter, ability to work with limited direction.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in office, production and outside areas.
  • Flexible work hours covering all shifts and extended hours, when necessary.
  • Work requires exposure to all temperature changes, high noise levels, working around moving equipment, tanks, heights, wet conditions, chemicals, vapors, vibrations, dust, etc.

Equipment Used

  • Personal protective equipment including safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, hearing protection, or other PPE as needed.
  • General office equipment such as phone, copier, tablets and computer.

Pay Range:
$80,000 – $90,000

Base pay offered may vary depending on geography, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position, is offered.
